Foods to Avoid During Chemotherapy in Children

Foods to Avoid During Chemotherapy in Children

  1. Raw or undercooked foods such as raw meat, undercooked chicken, and raw fish (such as sushi) should be avoided because children undergoing chemotherapy may have weakened immune systems and are at greater risk of foodborne infections. (Children & Young People's Cancer Association (CCLG), Nutrition) CCLG
  2. Raw or undercooked eggs, such as eggs with a runny yolk, should be limited in children receiving chemotherapy because bacteria such as Salmonella can cause serious infections. (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Food and Nutrition During Cancer Treatment, 2024) Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  3. Unpasteurized dairy products, including milk or cheese made from raw milk, can pose a significant infection risk and should be avoided. (CCLG, Nutrition Advice) CCLG
  4. Soft and mold-ripened cheeses such as Brie and Camembert should also be avoided, as they may be made from unpasteurized milk and can carry a risk of infection. (Blood Cancer United, Food & Nutrition for Children and Teens) Blood Cancer United
  5. Raw vegetables, especially fresh vegetables that have not been thoroughly washed, may carry harmful bacteria. Careful washing is therefore essential. (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Food and Nutrition Fact Sheet, 2024) Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  6. Raw or undercooked shrimp, shellfish, and other seafood should be avoided to reduce the risk of bacterial infections. (Dana-Farber / Boston Children's Cancer Center, Nutrition Education Guide) Dana-Farber / Boston Children's Cancer Center
  7. Highly caffeinated desserts and energy drinks should not be consumed regularly, as excessive caffeine and high sugar intake may negatively affect metabolic health. (CCLG, Nutrition Advice) CCLG
  8. Good food hygiene is extremely important. Washing hands, using clean surfaces, cooking food thoroughly, and storing leftovers properly can help reduce the risk of foodborne infections.
